The £1.4 million project to regenerate Coventry Street was completed in September 2006. The improvements have made the street more accessible and welcoming, with significant physical improvements:
Through the Heart of London, property owners Burford Group, Land Securities, British Land and Criterion Capital, in partnership with WCC and Transport for London, worked together to fund, design and implement the Coventry Street Improvement Scheme.
Work began on the South Side of Coventry Street in February 2006. The works had a real impact on the trading environment with footfall down 85 per cent on the previous year. We were instrumental in gaining to erect banners, promoting that it was ‘business as usual’.
Businesses trading on Coventry Street have reported real benefits from the much improved street environment. Pedestrian congestion has been eased, shop frontages improved and the street has a much more welcoming feel for visitors.
To maintain the street the Heart of London agreed a cleaning regime WCC, with deep cleansing and flushing to remove detritus, stains and gum and maintain the street’s condition. A sealant has also been applied to the pavement to ensure chewing gum does not permanently stick to the surface. We have purchased a new clean machine, Ruby, which is now being used on the paving in Coventry Street.
