The Theatreland Steering Group was set up in 2005 to develop a strategy for streetscape improvements in the areas around the theatres in the West End. Chaired by Cllr Alan Bradley, the aim has been to work in tandem with the theatre industry and key stakeholders to strengthen the identity of London’s theatre district and put a ‘sparkle’ back by bringing about physical improvements to the area.
Following on from the consultation on the Theatreland Strategy in March of this year we are progressing forward with the first of our key objectives. Lighting proposals have been drawn up for the entire Theatreland area by Graham Phoenix lighting specialists and have since been endorsed by the theatre industry and stakeholders working with WCC.
Lighting consultants are briefed to produce specific lighting designs for Shaftesbury Avenue, to showcase this primary Theatreland street by adding a night-time 'sparkle' to the West End Theatres in the vicinity. WCC is working to produce guidance on lighting and signage for the theatre buildings and an audit of the street signs, both of which will help to reinforce the unique Theatreland identity.
The Strand, Courts and Alleys scheme continues with improvements to Brydges Place and a focus on maintenance issues which has seen tangible results and an increased pedestrian usage. St. Martin's, Bull Inn and Lumley Courts will be the next in this programme, linking the West End's thriving theatre district and therefore providing a boost to this vital part of London's economy.
