On 7th June 2010, Heart of London Business Alliance hosted a Business Briefing on the Operational impact of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  Guest speakers were:

  • Matthew Foley - Chief Inspector, Metropolitan Police
  • PC Roger Smith - Events & Operations Office, Metropolitan Police
  • Kevin Mason - Licensing Enforcement, Premises Management, Westminster City Council

The key messages outlined for businesses were as follows:

  • All England games will have additional police presence, that being 1 Inspector, 3 Sergeants and 21 Constables to prevent public order offences.
  • The match of 23rd June (England v Slovenia, 3pm kick off) is the deciding game for England, determing whether they progress to the second round.
  • On Friday 11th June, there will be a large screen in Trafalgar Square which will show the opening ceremony and first match.  There are no plans in place to show any further games on this screen, therefore it will be removed.
  • In the event of incidents, early intervention is key.  If in doubt, contact the Police.

Due to increased crowds during the World Cup, low level crime such as bag theft and pick-pocketing could potentially rise.  To assist in ensuring that this does not occur, as well as ensuring that we do not see an increase in illegal street trading, additional Safe nights will take place throughout the four weeks of the World Cup to ensure that the area remains safe and welcoming.

The dates of these Safe Nights are:

  • Friday 18th - Saturday 19th June
  • Friday 25th - Saturday 26th June
  • Friday 2nd - Saturday 3rd July
  • Friday 9th - Saturday 10th July

All licensed premises should ensure that:

  • CCTV is working as this proves vital should the need arise to require any footage
  • All Door Supervisors to be SIA accredited and wearing high visibility jackets.
  • CCTV Radios are working

Premises who are members of the Heart of London radio link should make good use of the radio to notify CCTV of any issues which they can record and track.

If you do not have a radio, and need their assistance, please call CCTV on 020 7641 7210 (24 hours a day).

Should the need arise, there is a 'London wide' policing response available, managed from New Scotland Yard.
